Travel Immunisations and Advice
If you identify a need for immunisations you should book an appointment with a practice nurse well in advance of your trip - at least six weeks is needed for some immunisation courses. To make the most of your consultation with the practice nurse it is crucial that you bring a completed travel assessment form with you. This can be downloaded here:
Download - Pre-travel health and vaccination assessment
or collect from the practice. If you don’t have Adobe Reader on your computer (needed to download the form) you can get this free by using the following link: http://www.acrobat--reader.com/ukove.htm
The consultation is also more constructive if you have spent some time reading the general advice associated with your travel destination given on the travel website listed on our ‘Links’ page.
For anti-malarial drugs not available from the chemist 'over the counter' (ie: mefloquine, doxycycline or malarone) a private prescription can be arranged following your travel consultation with our practice nurses. We suggest reading about these drugs on the following link: www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/General/drugs_malaria_prophylax.html
This outlines the pros and cons of each of them so that you are in the best position to make an informed choice about which to use on your trip abroad. There are charges for anti-malarial drugs obtained on prescription (contact any chemist for current prices) and most of the immunisations you may need – our practice nurse will inform you of these during your initial consultation before the vaccines are ordered.
